Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has announced that the Netherlands will be stopping its development aid to Suriname in reaction to the passing of law there last week granting amnesty to the suspects of the December murders, the killings of dictator Desi Bouterse's political opponents in 1982. The minister added that economic sanctions were not feasible "much to my regret". He would however investigate whether some measures might be possible in a European Union context.
